What is Books to Treasure?
Books to Treasure is a special partnership between the Tulsa City-County Library and all Tulsa County elementary schools aimed at celebrating the beauty and power of children’s literature. Its goal is to connect children with books and inspire a love of learning and reading. The program accomplishes this goal by giving every 2nd grader in Tulsa County a copy of a featured book, an opportunity to get a library card, and a chance to meet a prominent children’s book author.
How Does it Work?
Every year a well known children’s book author is invited to Tulsa to participate in Books to Treasure. A featured book is selected from among this author’s work and a copy of this book is given to every 2nd grade student in Tulsa County. In 2011, over 10,300 books were distributed to Tula County 2nd grade students! Every student also receives a bookmark and bookplate featuring illustrations from the featured book.
Tulsa City-County Library Youth Librarians visit schools during the month of October to speak to students about this special book and the author. They also tell students about the importance of reading and the library. All 2nd graders have an opportunity to get a special library card featuring artwork from the featured book. In 2011, over 4,400 children received library cards as a part of the Books to Treasure program!
In early November, the featured author comes to Tulsa and visits 2nd grade students at area schools. They also give a public presentation and book signing at a Tulsa City-County Library location. This is an amazing opportunity for children to witness the creativity and passion that goes into the writing and illustration of a book, and to get to meet a favorite author!
Who Makes Books to Treasure Possible? When Did it Start?
The Books to Treasure program is sponsored annually by the Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation. With their support, the program began in 2003 and has grown into a Tulsa County tradition for 2nd grade students.
